Solids, Doublets and Triplet Opals
Australian opals are the finest in the world, but before you buy your precious opal, learn about the different forms they come in and what their pros and cons are.
Solid opals - are natural stones which have been cut and polished. Many of them have natural potch or rock backs. This is the only type of opal we sell. Australian Opal can not be enhanced or made better so you can be sure that your opal is indeed a true and real gemstone from Mother Nature. Please check out our Opal Facts and Myths page for more information
Doublet Opals - are two pieces that have been glued together. This involves taking a slice of high grade opal and bonding it to a dark backing to increase its play of colour. Do not take this type of opal into water as the glue eventually breaks down and causes the opal layer to flake off.
Triplet opals - are three pieces that have been glued together, opal in the middle with a glass cap and dark backing to the opal. The advantage of these are purely profit for the opal shop, they are cheap to make and can look like a bright and vibrant opal, at only a fraction of the price. Once again, do not get this type of opal wet, as the glue breaks down and causes the layers to flake off.
In our shop and online shop, we only offer Solid Natural Australian Opals. No Doublets and Triplets!
